Alternative Medicine

Mind, body intervention

Mind, body intervention relies on the mind, body, brain and behaviour interactions; it is thought that emotions, mental, social, spiritual and how we behave has an effect on our body and health. It is an alternative form of medicine and treatment which focuses on a person being responsible for their own self-care and knowledge and teaches techniques which emphasise this.

Mind and body medicine teaches many strategies that allow a person to help themselves and which are thought to aid in bringing about a feeling of wellness, relaxation and promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Strategies which are taught in mind, body intervention include hypnosis, relaxation techniques, visual imagery, meditation, yoga, tai-chi and cognitive behaviour therapy to name just a few, in this vast form of alternative medicine.

The theory behind this type of alternative medicine dates back for thousands of years, it integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. While this type of medicine has been used for thousands of years mainly in the East, here in the West it is only recently that the benefits of it have been realised and have been turned to. Many Doctors and hospitals now incorporate forms of holistic or alternative medicine and some forms can be found on the NHS.

Mind, body medicine is used for a wide range of illnesses, disease and problems and is one of the largest ranges of alternative medicine and therapies. Clinical trials have proved that mind; body intervention has shown successful results when treating patients with cancer who have had chemotherapy.

Those who have benefitted from mind, body intervention have recovered from the effects of chemotherapy and have suffered fewer effects than those not attending mind, body intervention classes.

Those people who suffer from stress and anxiety are known to have lower immune systems, mind; body intervention has proven to boost the immune system when related to problems associated with stress.

Along with this, those who were being prepared for major surgeries who were introduced to mind, body intervention were more prepared for the surgery, had lower pulses, remained calm during the lead up to the surgery and recovered quicker after the surgery itself. This includes mental improvement and outlook after surgery along with quicker skin healing and less scarring.

As mind, body intervention relies on many aspects of alternative medicine to be effective; it is classed as a total health care form of medicine. The majority of alternative total health care systems are based on the fact that if given the right circumstances such as a healthy diet, daily exercise and a good positive frame of mind the body has the ability to heal itself and will do that. It is only when we abuse our body and don’t give it the essential needs that things start to go wrong and it isn’t able to repair itself naturally.
