Alternative Medicine

The most popular herbal remedy

There are thousands of herbal remedies available from health food stores, chemists, even supermarkets and of course the herbalist. However one herbal remedy which stands out from the rest and which is one of the most popular, well known and most used is Ginkgo. Along with being one of the most popular and sought after forms of herbal remedy, which has many uses, it is also one of the oldest trees known to man and has been in existence for thousands of years.

What can Ginkgo be used for?

For thousands of years the seeds from the Ginkgo tree have been used in Traditional Chinese medicine, today it is the extract taken from the leave of the Ginkgo which is most widely used. Extract taken this way is very beneficial to a wide range of illnesses and diseases including treating asthma, bronchitis, tinnitus and fatigue to name just a few.

The extracts taken from the leaves of the Ginkgo are said to be especially useful when treating disorders of the memory such as Alzheimer’s disease, it decreases pain felt in those who suffer from narrowing of the arteries and is used widely as treatment for multiple sclerosis along with many other diseases and ailments.

How is Ginkgo bought?

Ginkgo can be purchased in many different forms from the actual seeds themselves which can either be cooked or eaten with salads raw. They often come in capsule form, pill form or in teas and occasionally some skin care products have the extract of Ginkgo in them.

Is Ginkgo safe to take are there any side effects associated with it?

Almost all forms of medicine whether they are traditional or alternative will occasionally cause some side effects and Ginkgo is no exception. Although regarded as a relatively safe form of alternative medicine Ginkgo has been known to cause some problems.

The most common side effects which those taking Ginkgo have occasionally reported are nausea, headache, gastrointestinal problems, and dizziness or skin reactions when used in a skin care product.

Those who are taking anticoagulant drugs should be very wary of taking any form of Ginkgo, as it has been associated with an increased bleeding risk. Also if you are scheduled to have any type surgery or if you have an appointment with a dentist for a tooth extraction then you should stop taking Ginkgo prior to the appointment and mention to whoever it concerns that you have been taking a product containing Ginkgo.

While the seeds of the Ginkgo can be eaten uncooked, great care should be taken if eating them this way, it is important that you don’t digest too many uncooked seeds as they do contain Ginkgo toxin which has been known to cause seizures in some people. If you wish to eat the seeds then preferably cook them before eating.

As with any form of alternative medicine it is essential that you seek the advice of your Doctor. This is particularly important if you are currently taking traditional medication prescribed by a Doctor. While alternative medicine is usually considered to be relatively safe, sometimes it can have adverse reactions when self medicating if you are already on prescribed medication for an illness.
