Music therapy

The ability to relate to music is well known, even babies in the womb are thought to react to music being played and when giving birth soft sounds can make for a more relaxing atmosphere. Nature sounds are well known and very effective measures to help those who suffer from sleep problems to go to sleep and those who suffer from accidents, injury, accident or illness have been known to respond well to familiar music being played over and over again. Without a doubt there is something to be said for music, this is perhaps why some people turn to an alternative form of therapy called music therapy.

What is music therapy?

Music has been used in therapy in a huge variety of different ways and for different purposes. One thing however remains the same regardless of which form the therapy takes and that is building up a relationship with the therapist and working together. The base for this partnership is the music making process; however therapy of this nature isn’t something which only those who know how to play a musical instrument or sing can take part in.

Music therapy isn’t about the quality of music or how well you can sing, but rather the taking part in making music. The music therapist will not give the patient lessons for singing or teach them how to play any specific musical instrument.

No particular style of music is used and indeed a wide variety of different styles are encouraged by the therapist. In the majority of cases no particular tune is followed so there is no need to learn how to read a music sheet, in general music will all be ad-libbed.

As long as you are making sounds then you are taking part in music therapy, regardless of what it actually sounds like, and this is what makes it a very versatile form of therapy which can be used for even small children and the elderly.

Music therapists will work in a wide variety of situations including in the home, hospital, nursing or care home, children’s home, day care centres, prisons and special schools.
How does music therapy help someone?

The benefits of music therapy are many and diverse and can be adapted for the needs of the client; this makes it excellent for many different conditions and needs. It is especially helpful for those who have trouble releasing their emotions or suffer from a lack of self-confidence.

However the treatment isn’t limited to this, indeed it can be used in many instances and has been with great success, it is a particular form of alternative therapy that is enjoyed by most children, who enjoy sessions so much they don’t even realise it is a form of therapy.
