Naturopathic medicineNaturopathic medicine is a total system of healthcare which relies strongly on philosophy. It has a totally natural approach to dealing with illness and believes in treating the person as a whole by taking many factors into account. Followers of naturopathy strongly believe that given chance the body will take of and with a little encouragement heal itself when treated correctly. Therefore diagnosis and treatment of disease is based on letting the body respond naturally and adapting the persons lifestyle for a better and healthier way of living to keep the body in better shape. Treatments are given that are specifically chosen to work with what is called the bodys life-force, this is the healing system that runs throughout the body. There are six underlying principles behind naturopathic medicine and these are as follows. The healing power of nature Those who believe in naturopathic medicine have the belief that the body if given time will right itself and cure all ills, the only role that the physician plays really is to help remove any obstacles in the way that prevent the body from taking care of itself. Identify and then treat the cause All illnesses happen for a specific reason, there will always be an underlying cause for the illness and once this has been discovered then the obstacles which are present and have caused it can be removed. Once the obstacles have been detected and removed the body is then free to heal itself. The belief is that symptoms are merely a way of expressing that there is something wrong within the body and are the bodys way of telling you something isnt right. Those who follow and practise naturopathic medicine strongly believe that symptoms shouldnt be suppressed with just medication, but rather the underlying cause needs to be found and dealt with. First do no harm This is a philosophy which all naturopathic believes in, if the symptoms are treated then it must be to find the cause not just to suppress them. If the symptoms were to just be suppressed without identifying and removing the cause of them, this is deemed to be harmful. Treat the person as a whole When looking for the underlying cause of the problem then the person should be treated on the whole. This means for example that other factors have to be taken into account not the just outwardly showing symptoms. The persons lifestyle is taken into account and will be questioned on such matters as their habits, mental health and diet. The physician is a teacher The physician in charge of you should do all they can to teach you how to take better care of your body and how to make changes to your lifestyle so that your body is able to heal itself naturally. Prevention is the best cure Although this is a relatively old saying, it is also one which is very true to those practising naturopathic medicine. The ultimate goal in life is to avoid illness and disease in the first place, this is made so by the physician teaching the person how to take better care of what their body needs and to read the signs it gives, such as the symptoms. |
