Tai-chiTai-chi is perhaps better known as a form of martial art, however it is far more than a simple way of fighting, in fact it is so much more. Tai-chi has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years as a form of alternative therapy for many ailments and illnesses. Along with this tai-chi is well known for its abilities to boost the concentration, aid in relaxation, develop concentration and strengthen muscles along with making joints suppler. The benefits of Tai-Chi One of the biggest benefits of performing tai-chi on a regular basis is its ability to bring together the body and mind as one. It allows one to totally lose themselves in themselves and forget about all outside distractions, stresses, aches and pains. While it doesnt actually treat illness and is not a remedy, those who practise tai-chi on a regular basis have been known to be a lot healthier and fitter than those who dont practise. How is tai-chi performed? The easiest way to explain tai-chi is that it is a form of slow flowing movements combined into one pattern or form of exercise which is performed fluidly. The movements are co-ordinated along with the breathing as they are being performed and at no time should there be a sense of rushing, the whole form relies on concentration of the present and all thoughts and feelings should be left to drift away throughout the form. The only thought should be on the inner being and the breath entering and leaving the body. There are many short steps to tai-chi and all are given unusual names, for those who are just starting out in tai-chi, it is essential to learn the movements one step at a time, practising that step or exercise until it can be performed off by heart without giving it a thought. Once you can do this then this move onto learning the next stage or exercise, again when you can perform this movement fluidly, then you can go onto combining the two in one fluid movement. The rest of the exercises are learnt the same way, gradually combining them until you have the whole pattern and are able to perform them as one complete movement. How can I learn tai-chi? While tai-chi isnt particularly a hard form to learn, some of the individual exercises can be quite tricky. As such the ideal way for a beginner to learn the form is by attending a class, where a master can teach you the correct movements. As tai-chi relies heavily on the form and the slowness at which the exercises are performed, this can really only be learnt by watching. If you dont fancy attending a class or there isnt one in your area then the next best thing is purchasing a DVD, a DVD will have someone conducting the tai-chi form and as this is on DVD you can take things as slowly as you need to, to pick up the individual exercises one by one before moving on.. |
