The Alexander techniqueThe Alexander technique is a form of alternative therapy that is becoming very popular, it is a complete system that shows you how you can simply change your life to live happy and healthier. It is a method which works to help us to change our habits and the way we do things in our everyday life, things that have an adverse effect on our health over a period of time. The Alexander technique focuses on and shows us how we can change aspects such as the way we move throughout the day, how we balance and support ourselves and can teach us better co-ordination. By following this technique you will find that more often than not we put far more effort into a particular task than what is needed. The technique shows you how to give just enough effort to get the task at hand accomplished whilst saving precious energy for the more demanding tasks. It isnt defined as a treatment or a form of exercise but rather a way of re-educating ourselves, it is more about rebalancing the body in all aspects to achieve a healthier, fitter and happier person. It is a technique which once instilled in your mind can help in all daily activities including sitting, relaxing, walking, talking, and working and even at rest. As one person who follows the Alexander technique put it it is an intelligent way of solving all the bodies problems. How does the Alexander technique work? When asked about how the techniques works, then the best way that it has been described is to think of how a child carries themselves. A child will hold their head without any tension in the neck; the whole body is relaxed and moves freely. There is no tension in a child except of course when it feels danger or apprehension and this is when the body naturally takes over. As adults we tend to forget that our body is able to look after itself, and we tense up on a regular basis throughout the day, we do it unconsciously. It is a pattern that we instil in ourselves to an extent that we dont realise when we are doing it, we hold our head tensely on our neck, the neck stiffens to take the pressure, the shoulders begin to ache as a result of tension and this is then transferred throughout the body to the rest of our limbs and organs. Therefore the very basic idea behind the technique is to remember to carry the head lightly on top of the spine, when this happens there is a good relationship between the head and the spine and this has an amazing effect on the rest of the body. There quite simply is no tension and no tension means and relaxed and calm body, if the body is relaxed and calm then our mood totally changes, we feel happier, are better able to cope with whatever comes our way and so live a happier lifestyle. |
